The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime estimated that poppy cultivation in Afghanistan fell from around 232,000 hectares in 2022 to roughly 10,200 hectares in 2025. Its 2025 survey put potential opium production at about 296 tonnes, down 32% compared with 2024, and cited both the cultivation ban and drought among the factors influencing the trend.
Separately, Afghanistan's government media centre reported that 174 new industrial businesses had been established or brought into operation. Officials also referred to land allocations for 576 factories, although land allocation and actual operational status are different measures and should not be counted as the same outcome.
Government trade figures for 2025 put Afghanistan's total external trade at approximately $13.9 billion, with imports accounting for a substantially larger share than exports. These statistics cover different reporting periods and should not be presented as a single new announcement made on October 14.
