Despite limited opportunities to study artificial intelligence in Afghanistan, efforts continue to help young people learn new skills through online training. In a report published on June 18, 2026, the United Nations Development Programme described Afghanistan's first machine learning bootcamp.

The programme received more than 450 applications and selected 95 candidates, including 25 women. According to the UN, 41 members of the first cohort completed three months of training in March 2025. The curriculum included Python, machine learning, business skills and leadership.

This is a background report on the potential of AI-related development in Afghanistan, not news of a new graduation on October 10. Access to online education and existing restrictions on higher education for girls and women must also be taken into account.
