Brussels — Henna Virkkunen, a senior European Union technology official, says the EU Artificial Intelligence Act provides a framework for oversight and safety rules to address high-risk AI systems.
According to a Reuters report on October 9, the European Commission has been seeking information from AI companies about compliance and safety measures. European legislation classifies AI systems by risk level, applies restrictions or oversight to particular uses and imposes transparency requirements.
This is the European Commission's position; it does not establish that existing legislation can prevent every possible risk posed by future AI technologies. Practical enforcement and independent expert scrutiny will remain important.
