Freight traffic through Afghanistan's Hairatan railway port in the north has increased, according to local transport officials. Sayed Qadeem Karimi, a transport department official at the port, said an average of about 280 to 300 freight wagons arrive each day from Central Asian countries.
The roughly 75-kilometre railway between Hairatan and Mazar-i-Sharif links Afghanistan to Uzbekistan and onward Central Asian trade routes. Officials say shipments include industrial equipment, electrical goods, medical products and everyday consumer supplies.
Higher rail traffic could support Afghanistan's regional commerce and freight-handling capacity, although the reported daily wagon count is an operational estimate supplied by port officials and may vary from day to day.
