Afghan authorities inaugurated a 121-kilometre road in Badakhshan's Wakhan Corridor on October 4, 2026. The route runs from Broghil towards the zero point at the Chinese border, in a project that officials describe as a step towards stronger regional transport and commercial connections.
According to Afghanistan's Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, the two-stage project cost around 365 million afghanis. The road is currently unpaved, with a gravel or dirt surface, and should not be confused with a completed all-weather international commercial highway.
The route could eventually offer additional links with China and Central Asia. Its practical value for cross-border trade will depend on customs arrangements, border facilities, further road improvements and agreements governing commercial traffic.
