An expedition examining a possible clue to the fate of aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart's missing aircraft has reached the Pacific island of Nikumaroro. Purdue University said researchers arrived on October 13 and began preparing equipment for field operations related to the plane that disappeared in 1937.

The investigation focuses on a feature seen in imagery of the lagoon and often called the Taraia Object. Researchers hope to establish whether it could be connected to Earhart's Lockheed Electra or is instead a natural feature. Other observers have suggested it may be submerged vegetation or debris.

No aircraft wreckage has yet been confirmed at the location, and an answer generated by ChatGPT or another AI system would not constitute scientific proof of the plane's whereabouts. Reliable conclusions require physical investigation and examination of evidence.
