Neria Leiter, the 38-year-old son of Israel's ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, was seriously injured on September 23, 2026 after being struck by a vehicle near a checkpoint on Route 443 in the West Bank. Israeli police and the military described the incident as a car-ramming attack. Leiter is an Israeli military reservist.
He was taken unconscious to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, where doctors performed emergency brain surgery lasting several hours after a severe head injury and brain bleeding. On September 24, trauma unit director Dr. Alon Schwartz said Leiter's condition had stabilized but remained serious and his life was still in danger. He was being treated in intensive care, and no immediate further surgery was planned.
Yechiel Leiter returned to Israel from the United States and said doctors had stabilized his son's condition and the family remained hopeful, while stressing that his life was still in danger.
Another of Yechiel Leiter's sons, Maj. (res.) Moshe Yedidya Leiter, was killed in fighting in northern Gaza on November 10, 2023. Israel's official military memorial record lists him as 39 years old at the time of his death.
