Afghanistan's National Disaster Management Authority and the Danish Refugee Council's mine-action programme have signed two agreements worth about $4.13 million for clearance of landmines and explosive remnants of war.
Afghan authorities say the projects will survey and clear more than 1.5 million square metres of contaminated land. The work also includes urgent explosive-ordnance disposal and mine-risk education.
Ariana News reported that one project covers activities in 13 provinces, while a second includes Kabul, Kandahar, Nimroz and Nangarhar and provides risk education for returning Afghans as well as support for victims.
Decades of conflict have left Afghanistan heavily affected by mines and other explosive remnants. The United Nations Mine Action Service says large-scale clearance and risk-education work continues across the country.
