Denmark and Greenland say a new security arrangement with the United States will not compromise Greenland’s sovereignty or right to self-determination.
The clarification followed US President Donald Trump’s description of the agreement as giving Washington permanent control over Greenland’s security. Reuters and the Associated Press reported that the pact is intended to expand the US military presence and restrict sensitive activity by non-NATO adversaries.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stressed that sovereignty would remain intact. The agreement still has to pass relevant parliamentary procedures. Full terms have not yet been made public.
