Iranian Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi has said Tehran is ready to provide Afghanistan with up to 2,000 megawatts of electricity. The statement came during a meeting with Ahmad Jan Bilal, head of Afghanistan’s General Directorate of State-Owned Corporations, where the two sides also discussed cooperation on electricity, safe drinking water and wastewater treatment.
Pajhwok reported that Aliabadi also offered cooperation in training Afghan technical staff and strengthening professional capacity. The Afghan side called for wider energy cooperation and joint projects.
Afghanistan relies heavily on imported electricity from neighbouring countries, including Iran. In February 2026, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat extended its electricity-purchase agreement with Iran.
Commercial terms, transmission requirements, a delivery timetable and the details of any new agreement for the proposed 2,000MW supply have not yet been made public. The announcement is therefore an expression of readiness rather than confirmation that the full amount is already being delivered.
