A major attack struck a police facility in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, during Friday prayers, with casualty figures still subject to change as authorities and hospitals update their counts.

Reuters reported at least 16 people killed and 57 wounded in its September 18 report. Police said an explosives-laden vehicle hit the compound's outer wall before armed attackers opened fire. Five police officers were among the dead in the Reuters account, and police said all seven attackers were killed during the blast and subsequent gun battle.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility in the Reuters report. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan issued a statement denying involvement. Pakistani officials have repeatedly accused militants of using sanctuaries across the Afghan border, while Afghanistan's Taliban authorities reject that accusation.
