Norway has contributed 15 million Norwegian kroner, equivalent to about $1.63 million, to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
Pajhwok Afghan News reported on September 21 that OCHA welcomed the contribution and said it would help sustain humanitarian assistance for people in need across Afghanistan.
The Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund is a country-based pooled fund managed by OCHA. It finances humanitarian projects based on assessed needs and priorities, with allocations made through the UN humanitarian coordination system and implemented by eligible partners.
The fund was established in 2014 and is used to support coordinated humanitarian response across sectors where needs are considered most urgent.
The latest Norwegian contribution is relatively modest compared with Afghanistan’s overall humanitarian requirements, but pooled funds can be used flexibly to direct money toward priority responses as needs change.
The announcement concerns a financial contribution to the UN-managed fund; it does not specify in the initial report which individual projects, provinces or sectors will receive the new money.
