Oil prices rose modestly on September 22 after five consecutive sessions of declines, with Brent crude moving back above $101 a barrel as investors watched for possible diplomatic movement between the United States and Iran.

Reuters reported that November Brent futures rose $1.14 to $101.48 a barrel, while the expiring October U.S. West Texas Intermediate contract gained 87 cents to $96.65. The more actively traded November WTI contract rose 85 cents to $93.22.

The rebound followed a sharp fall on September 21, when Brent briefly dropped below $100 and touched its lowest level in 12 days. Analysts cited by Reuters said the latest rise appeared to be driven largely by short-covering rather than a clear change in underlying market fundamentals.

Investors are monitoring the United Nations General Assembly for any sign of direct U.S.-Iran engagement. The prospect of talks is being treated by markets as a possible diplomatic opening, not as confirmation that negotiations have begun or that an agreement is in place.

Supply conditions are also shaping prices. Reuters reported that Saudi crude exports through Gulf terminals have increased as the kingdom adjusts flows following disruption to its East-West Pipeline, while some supply from Libya was reduced after a valve closure at the Sharara oilfield.

The market therefore remains highly sensitive to both political signals and physical supply disruptions. The latest price increase reverses part of the previous decline but does not yet establish a sustained upward trend.
