A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 73% of Americans are concerned artificial-intelligence companies have not done enough to prevent the technology from causing serious harm to society.
The four-day poll, which concluded on September 20, also found that 39% of respondents said AI is having a negative impact on society, the highest share since Reuters/Ipsos began asking the question in March. Eleven percent said the technology was having a positive impact.
Fifty-five percent said slowing AI development would be a good thing, while 13% said it would be bad.
The poll also found broad concern about whether AI companies can regulate themselves, with many respondents saying federal authorities should play a major role in setting safety standards.
These results measure public opinion, not the actual technical safety of AI systems or the effectiveness of any specific company's safeguards.
Poll findings can also change over time as public awareness, technology use and political debate evolve.
