A series of explosions tore through a Syrian army weapons depot near al-Eis in Aleppo province early on September 21, wounding four people and forcing residents from nearby homes, Reuters reported.
Syria’s Emergency and Disaster Management Ministry said four people were hurt, including one person injured by falling shrapnel. State news agency SANA reported that rescue teams helped residents leave nearby houses while authorities closed roads leading toward the site. Emergency workers were also clearing unexploded projectiles from the surrounding area.
Syrian authorities did not immediately identify the cause of the explosions. The Defence Ministry said it was investigating this and other recent blasts at military facilities and would take measures aimed at preventing similar incidents.
Reuters described the al-Eis explosion as the fourth such event at a Syrian military storage site this month. Earlier incidents included a September 9 depot explosion in neighbouring Idlib province that killed 14 people and another blast in eastern Syria that killed 11.
Because investigators have not established the cause of the latest incident, it should not be described as an attack or strike without further evidence. Reuters has counted at least 16 similar explosions at arms-storage facilities since December 2024.
