More than 130,000 people have been displaced in Yemen this month as fighting intensifies, and another 100,000 could be forced from their homes over the next three months, the United Nations refugee agency said on September 22.
UNHCR spokesperson Babar Baloch told a Geneva briefing that growing numbers of Yemenis could be displaced both within the country and across the Red Sea to Djibouti, Somalia and other destinations.
The new UNHCR figures deepen an already severe humanitarian picture. The World Food Programme has separately warned that more than 18 million people in Yemen face acute food insecurity and that humanitarian operations are underfunded.
Reuters reported that more than 3,000 people have already crossed the Red Sea toward Africa amid the latest escalation.
The displacement is linked to intensified fighting between Houthi forces and the Saudi-backed government side. Descriptions of responsibility for individual military incidents remain contested and should be attributed where relevant.
UNHCR’s projection of another 100,000 displaced people is a planning estimate rather than a confirmed future total.
