The popularity of short video has encouraged a lazy conclusion: people no longer read long articles. The more useful question is whether many websites still make long reading comfortable.
Dense paragraphs, intrusive pop-ups, tiny type, endless sticky controls and slow pages can make even excellent reporting feel like work. A clean article page does the opposite. It gives the headline room, keeps the reading width sensible and lets the body continue without artificial “show more” barriers.
Long-form reading survives when readers can trust that the time investment will be rewarded. Publications should not force every story to become short. They should make long stories easier to enter, navigate and finish.
