Monthly data published by the Islamabad-based Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) point to a sharp deterioration in Pakistan's security environment during 2026.
The published monthly figures add up to 990 militant attacks from January through August. Over the same period, deaths linked to militant violence and counter-militancy operations reached 3,155.
That distinction matters: the figure of 3,155 is not a count of deaths caused only by militant attacks. It is PICSS's broader combat-related total, combining fatalities from militant violence with deaths recorded during security-force counter-militancy operations.
PICSS reported 2,786 combat-related deaths in the first seven months of 2026. July was the deadliest month of the year, with 606 people killed and 232 injured. The dead included 401 militants, 112 security-force personnel, 74 civilians and 19 members of pro-government peace committees. Eight suicide attacks were recorded in July.
In August, militant attacks rose to 199 from 144 in July, an increase of 38 percent. The direct human impact of militant attacks nevertheless declined: attacks caused 158 deaths and 181 injuries in August. Security-force operations accounted for another 211 deaths, including 203 militants. The overall August toll was therefore 369 combat-related deaths and 217 injuries.
PICSS recorded three suicide attacks in August, down from eight in July.
Earlier in the year, overall combat-related deaths stood at 361 in January, 506 in February, 331 in March and 291 in April. By the end of April, PICSS had recorded 401 militant attacks.
Attack frequency reached 146 in March before falling to 85 in April. PICSS recorded 118 attacks in June, 144 in July and 199 in August. Its June report said the 118 attacks represented an 8 percent decline from May, implying roughly 128 attacks in May.
The longer-term comparison is also stark. PICSS says combat-related deaths rose from 1,950 in 2024 to 3,413 in 2025. It recorded 1,066 militant attacks during all of 2025.
That means the 990 attacks recorded in the first eight months of 2026 were already only 76 short of the full-year 2025 total.
PICSS data continue to show that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the former tribal districts and Balochistan bear the heaviest burden of militant violence. Recorded tactics have included targeted killings, IEDs, tactical assaults, suicide bombings and drone or quadcopter attacks.
Because PICSS separates deaths caused directly by militant attacks from deaths recorded in counter-militancy operations, the two categories should not be treated as identical. Margalla News is presenting the data using PICSS's published classifications.
