The AI chip race explained: Nvidia, AMD, Huawei and Alibaba are competing on more than silicon

AI competition now spans accelerators, memory, networking, software, data-centre scale and export controls. A fast chip alone is no longer enough.

The phrase “AI chip race” sounds like a contest to build the fastest processor. In reality, the competition is about entire computing systems.

Nvidia remains the reference point for high-end AI accelerators because its GPUs are combined with a mature software ecosystem, high-speed networking and tightly integrated data-centre systems. AMD has been pushing from individual accelerators toward full AI systems, and its rising role in data-centre computing helped drive its market value above $1 trillion in September 2026.

In China, U.S. export controls have accelerated efforts to build domestic alternatives. Huawei’s Ascend line is one of the most important, while Alibaba’s T-Head unit has unveiled new chips designed to support very large AI models. Reuters reported in September that Alibaba introduced its Zhenwu V900 and plans much larger model and data-centre deployments.

Performance depends on more than the processor. High-bandwidth memory must feed data to the accelerator quickly. Networking connects thousands of chips into one cluster. Packaging places processors and memory close together. Software libraries determine whether developers can actually use the hardware efficiently.

Supply chains also shape the race. Export restrictions limit which advanced chips or memory products can be sold to China, while Chinese policy encourages local alternatives. At the same time, Chinese firms still seek access to some Nvidia products when licences allow.

That means there may not be a single “winner”. One company can lead in raw accelerator performance, another in memory, another in low-cost inference or domestic availability.

The best way to compare AI hardware is therefore to ask five questions: how fast is the chip, how much memory bandwidth does it have, how well can thousands of chips work together, how mature is the software, and how reliably can customers buy the system at scale?
