The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye is facing an early practical test after renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, but Pakistan has not announced any new troop deployment or direct military action in Yemen.
Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said earlier this month that attacks on Saudi Arabia could activate provisions of the agreement. Pakistan’s Foreign Office later said the pact is defensive and that mechanisms and frameworks for its operational implementation are still being developed. Islamabad also reiterated support for dialogue and diplomacy aimed at regional peace and stability.
The agreement was signed in Mecca on August 7. The official joint statement says an armed attack against one member is to be regarded as an attack against all three. Public statements, however, have not set out an automatic military deployment formula for every contingency.
Pakistan has reiterated its commitment to Saudi security, while Türkiye has also expressed readiness to provide defence support if required. Available official statements do not confirm a final Pakistani decision to conduct military operations in Yemen.
