Islamabad — Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said the federal government had completed its deliberations on a possible emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He stressed the need for the provincial government to cooperate in counterterrorism efforts.
Speaking on a television programme on the night of October 9, the minister warned that emergency powers could be used if the provincial government did not cooperate with the federation and relevant institutions. However, he did not confirm a reported high-level meeting intended to take a final decision on Saturday.
Federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa political leaders have expressed differing positions. Importantly, the possibility of an emergency, a political statement and a formal constitutional notification imposing one are separate matters. No verified announcement of its imposition had emerged when this October 10 report was prepared.
