Herat — Despite economic hardship and some social and family restrictions, many women in Herat are seeking to support their families by running market businesses. An October 8 Pajhwok Afghan News report described the experiences of women vendors and business representatives.
According to an official of the Women's Chamber of Commerce for Afghanistan's western region, 119 women are engaged in business activities in markets designated for women. Entrepreneurs described challenges including customers' trust in their products, family approval, sales opportunities and access to physical marketplaces.
This local number should not be taken as representative of women's overall employment across Afghanistan or as evidence of a general easing of restrictions. Economic opportunities for women, education and safe working conditions remain important development issues.
