Pakistan's Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is expanding the use of artificial intelligence and automated data comparisons to scrutinise income tax returns. Under an approach reported in early October, information on declared earnings and assets can be checked against available banking, property, vehicle and other government records to identify potential discrepancies.

The initiative is intended to improve the targeting of scrutiny and reduce unnecessary manual intervention. The FBR had also published proposed rules concerning electronic examination of taxpayers' returns, with officials presenting technology as a way to make enforcement more systematic.

An automated mismatch is an indication for further examination, not proof of tax evasion. Any enforcement decision remains subject to applicable law, supporting evidence and procedures that allow taxpayers to explain or contest the discrepancy.
