Yemen's Houthis fired missiles at the presidential palace complex in the southern city of Aden on Thursday, killing two guards, two government officials told Reuters.
Yemen's prime minister and cabinet members who were at the al-Maashiq palace complex were unharmed, Information Minister Moammar al-Eryani said, adding that the Houthis had fired five missiles at the complex. The palace is the seat of Yemen's Saudi-backed, internationally recognised government.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group had targeted what he described as a Saudi military operations headquarters at the complex, as part of a declared policy of targeting Saudi reinforcements wherever they are located. Reuters could not independently verify that claim.
The attack was the first of its kind on the headquarters of the internationally recognised government, and it came as fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed forces intensified.
Separately on Thursday, the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen said the Houthis had attempted to attack dozens of Saudi airports, ports and oil facilities. Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki said the Houthis had launched 20 attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh this month, killing 17 people and wounding 333 others, and that attacks on Abha airport had killed three people and wounded 28. The coalition also said it had destroyed 127 weapons storage facilities and launch platforms in Yemen.
