Waseem was 15. He lived in an orphanage run by a non-governmental organisation, and just seven days earlier he had been sent to an electrician to learn the trade. Now, according to Multan police, that man is under arrest over the boy's death, Geo News reported.
Police say Waseem left work at the suspect's house in a private housing society, and the suspect chased him in his car and ran him over. CCTV footage reportedly shows the teenager running before the car hits him. The suspect has been arrested and a murder case registered.
Sent to learn a skill
Multan City Police Officer Akhtar Farooq said the orphanage administration had sent Waseem to the suspect, identified as Tauqeer, who does electrical work at various buildings and was training the boy as an electrician.
Farooq said children from the orphanage had been sent to the same man for vocational training before. Investigators are examining the circumstances in which Waseem was placed with him and the events leading to his death.
Police said initial inquiries found no evidence that the boy had committed any theft. Some members of the orphanage administration have been detained for questioning. The case was registered with police as the complainant.
A quiet funeral at home
Waseem was originally from Muzaffargarh. His paternal and maternal uncles took his body there, and he was buried in the ancestral graveyard after funeral prayers in the village of Daultpur. According to available reports, only close relatives and orphanage officials attended, and the burial was held quickly because of the condition of the body.
Police say the investigation is continuing. The death also raises questions about who orphanages entrust their children to when they send them out to learn a trade, and who checks on them.
