According to sources, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed authorities to enforce a ban on camera-equipped glasses and other spy devices across the province, following complaints about illegal surveillance through such gadgets.
The directive comes days after the provincial government decided to ban devices used for spying, including glasses, pens, watches and other gadgets fitted with hidden cameras and recorders. A Punjab Home Department spokesperson said strict legal action would be taken against the use, purchase and sale of such equipment, with tough punishment for illegal use of everyday items hiding cameras.
The spokesperson said the decision aims to protect citizens' privacy and personal data, particularly the safety of women and children, after complaints of harassment and blackmail involving spy devices.
The move comes amid growing calls worldwide to curb smart glasses. citing sources, the report says the glasses can take photos, record video, make calls, translate text and talk to an AI assistant, with sales now in the millions.
In Britain, a petition demanded a ban on their sale after secretly filmed footage of women and girls appeared online. Oslo has banned the glasses in schools, and France's data protection watchdog CNIL has urged vigilance. Reports also say Meta is developing a facial recognition feature for the devices.
