Australia's Glenn Maxwell has retired from international cricket. The 38-year-old is also walking away from first-class and List A cricket, but will remain available for Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League after his contract was extended to the 2027-28 season.
Maxwell quit ODIs in June last year but stayed available for T20Is and played at the 2026 T20 World Cup, where Australia failed to get past the group stage. The team's final match of that tournament, against Oman in February, now stands as his last game for his country; he took two wickets and did not bat.
Speaking on a podcast, Maxwell said there had been no pressure from team management and that Australia wanted to look at young players ahead of the 2028 Olympics. He admitted he had held a small hope of a farewell match at the MCG but said he understood the direction the squad was taking.
A two-time ODI World Cup winner, Maxwell also hit the winning runs when Australia won the T20 World Cup in 2021. He scored 2,897 runs in 130 T20Is at a strike rate of 154.42 and took 51 wickets. His five T20I centuries are a world record he shares with India's Rohit Sharma. He also played seven Tests, with a best of 104 against India in Ranchi in 2017.
