China ambassador warns Taiwan and human rights are red lines ahead of Trump-Xi summit

China’s ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, said Taiwan, human rights and several other issues were red lines for Beijing that should not be crossed ahead of President Xi Jinping’s expected summit in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump. Writing in the Communist Party’s official People’s Daily, Xie said managing differences required good faith and argued that Washington should not use national security, economic imbalances or forced-labour allegations as pretexts to constrain China. Beijing considers Taiwan part of China, while the United States maintains unofficial ties with Taiwan and supports its ability to defend itself. The remarks came against a backdrop of tension over trade, technology, artificial intelligence and Taiwan. The statement sets out China’s publicly stated position ahead of the summit and does not establish what, if any, agreements the two leaders may reach.
