Chinese artificial-intelligence startup DeepSeek is expected to brief the United Nations Security Council this week on risks associated with advanced AI, Reuters reported on September 22, citing two people familiar with the plans.
The 15-member Security Council is scheduled to meet on Wednesday to discuss artificial intelligence and international security.
OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman is also expected to participate, while diplomats anticipate senior representatives from Anthropic. Reuters reported that DeepSeek and other Chinese AI companies, including Moonshot, have been invited to make statements.
DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng is not expected to attend, one source said. Reuters cautioned that plans remain fluid and could change at short notice.
The briefing does not represent a UN endorsement of any company's policy position. It is part of a broader Security Council discussion about AI risks, governance and international security.
The council first held a formal meeting on AI risks in 2023, and disagreements remain between major powers over how much development should be slowed, regulated or coordinated internationally.
