The United Nations Security Council will hold a high-level briefing on artificial intelligence and international security on Wednesday, bringing together executives from leading AI companies and a senior scientific adviser to the UN.
Reuters reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Hugging Face co-founder Clément Delangue are due to brief the 15-member council. Yoshua Bengio, co-chair of the UN Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence, is also scheduled to address the meeting. Security Council Report independently listed the same four anticipated briefers. France, which holds the council presidency for September, is convening the session.
The discussion is expected to focus on how governments can capture the benefits of increasingly capable AI systems while reducing risks from malicious use, misalignment and possible loss of human control. Reuters reported that Altman plans to urge world leaders to adopt benchmarks for measuring AI capabilities and assessing the safeguards companies put in place as they develop the technology.
Chinese AI companies including DeepSeek and Moonshot were also reported to have been invited to make statements. The meeting is a policy and security briefing rather than a vote on a binding global AI regime, and any substantive outcome will depend on subsequent council discussions.
