Indian authorities are investigating LG Electronics and Samsung over the import duties paid on display parts used in high-end OLED televisions, Reuters reported, citing five sources familiar with the matter.
The investigation is examining whether imported OLED display components were classified under a concessional tariff category carrying a 5% duty or should have fallen under a higher-duty classification. The inquiries remain ongoing and no final finding of wrongdoing has been made against either company.
According to the sources, LG received written questions from Indian authorities about its OLED imports and submitted responses. One source said the company also made a voluntary, unspecified deposit that could be used toward any additional duty later assessed. Samsung is also a major seller of OLED televisions in India and is already contesting a separate import-tax demand involving networking equipment.
Indian electronics industry groups have meanwhile urged the government to extend lower-duty treatment to OLED display parts, arguing that the current tariff structure favours older LCD and LED technologies. The investigation therefore sits within a broader debate over India’s effort to expand local manufacturing while enforcing customs rules on imported high-value components.
