North Korea’s Ri Song-gum produced a record-breaking performance to win the women’s 49kg weightlifting gold medal at the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan.
Ri lifted 94kg in the snatch, one kilogram above the previous world record. In the clean and jerk she improved the world record twice, first with 116kg and then with 121kg. Her combined total of 215kg was seven kilograms above the previous world record total.
India’s Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal with a total of 198kg, comprising an 87kg snatch and a 111kg clean and jerk. Indonesia’s Diana Tri Wijayana took bronze with a combined 191kg.
The victory gave Ri a third Asian Games weightlifting gold and made her the first woman to win three gold medals in the sport at the Games. Chanu’s silver was her first Asian Games medal and India’s first weightlifting medal at the event since 1998.
