South Korea plans to launch a 4.7 trillion won (about $3.5 billion) programme to develop a frontier artificial intelligence model beginning in March 2027, according to the Ministry of Science and ICT, Reuters reported on October 6.

The ministry plans to select a lead developer through a competitive tender after parliament approves the 2027 budget, and the winner could be chosen as early as February, according to the report.

The programme is planned to combine state equity investment and private funding with support in computing chips, data and talent, Reuters reported. The measures remain plans subject to budget approval.
