A pharmaceutical factory established with a $30 million investment has opened in Herat province, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health says. Dem Pharma was built to expand domestic medicine production, improve access to quality products and reduce reliance on imports.
The ministry says the plant can manufacture around 300 types of medicines. A second phase, expected to cost $15 million, was also launched and is planned to produce injectable medicines with annual capacity of 30 million ampoules and 25 million vials.
Officials described domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing as important for both healthcare and industrial growth. The project’s longer-term impact will depend on sustained production quality, raw-material supply, distribution and market demand.
