Afghanistan's Minister of Industry and Commerce Nooruddin Azizi met Iranian Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi in Kabul to discuss the possibility of Iran exporting approximately 2,000 megawatts of electricity to Afghanistan. Pajhwok reported the talks on October 8, citing the Afghan ministry.

According to the ministry, the meeting also addressed equipment needed for power generation facilities and water treatment plants in Afghanistan. Both sides explored opportunities for joint investment, expanded trade and use of their existing economic capacities. Iranian Ambassador Alireza Bigdeli also attended.

The Iranian delegation invited the Afghan minister to take part in upcoming water and electricity exhibitions in Iran. The Afghan minister expressed interest in deeper bilateral economic cooperation.

The 2,000-megawatt supply remains a subject of discussion. No final electricity purchase agreement, financial terms, transmission line or start date for delivery was announced in the available report. It would therefore be premature to describe the project as completed.
