A new survey in the United States found that 64% of adults believe artificial intelligence is developing too quickly. In the AP-NORC poll published on October 8, around 27% considered the current pace appropriate and 8% said it was too slow.
According to the poll, views differed between supporters of political parties, but concern existed on both sides. About 76% of Democratic voters and 54% of Republican voters said AI development was proceeding too rapidly. A substantial majority wanted the government to prioritise human oversight and protection of American workers.
The survey also found that many respondents had little confidence that either major political party could deal effectively with problems related to AI. The report placed these findings in the context of ongoing debates about jobs, safety and government policies for new technologies.
The study was based on online and telephone interviews with 2,140 US adults between September 24 and 28, 2026. The overall margin of sampling error was reported to be around 2.9 percentage points. This is a survey of US public opinion, not global opinion.
