Nushki is a sparsely populated district in western Balochistan, but its location gives it outsized security importance. It lies west of Quetta on routes connecting Pakistan’s provincial capital with the Afghan border and onward toward Iran.
The geography is difficult. Balochistan is Pakistan’s largest province by area but one of its least densely populated. Long roads cross deserts and mountains, settlements are widely dispersed and security forces must cover large distances. That makes policing, rapid response and protection of public workers more challenging than in dense urban areas.
The threat environment is also layered. Baloch separatist organisations have carried out attacks across the province for years. Islamist militant groups, including Islamic State affiliates and Pakistan-focused jihadist factions, have also operated or claimed attacks in parts of Balochistan. These are different movements with different goals, so attacks should not be attributed to one group merely because they occur in the same province.
Nushki also matters because civilian state services often require armed protection. The September 22, 2026 attack on police officers guarding a polio vaccination team showed how a small security detail can become a target even when health workers themselves are not harmed.
Cross-border geography adds another layer. Movement toward Afghanistan and Iran creates legitimate trade and travel, but remote routes can also be exploited for smuggling or militant mobility. States therefore try to secure roads and crossings without cutting off local livelihoods.
The broader lesson is that “Balochistan security” is not one conflict. It combines a separatist insurgency, Islamist militancy, border management, organised crime and the challenge of protecting infrastructure and public services over a vast territory. Nushki sits at the intersection of several of those pressures, which is why incidents there can carry significance beyond the district itself.
