Brazilian President Lula said he will send Congress a constitutional amendment guaranteeing free weekend public transit nationwide.
Funding would come from congressional budget earmarks, he said.
Lula gave no firm date for sending the amendment. The announcement came less than two weeks before the October 25 runoff.
Free transit could benefit lower-income citizens, but it would also add to government budget pressures.
