Anthropic says it will commit 5 percent of its shares to a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, subject to stockholder approval.
The fund will be a wholly owned limited liability company, not a nonprofit. It can be used for nonprofit donations and direct distributions to specific populations, including work on AI-related labour-market disruption. Anthropic has already committed $200 million to studying and addressing that disruption. The fund will not be used for lobbying or political donations.
The commitment can grow: the board may add a further 2 percent for every 50 percent increase in valuation above a baseline that has not yet been disclosed. The increase is discretionary, not automatic.
Combined with a pledge by the co-founders to give 80 percent of their holdings and an employee programme, about 20 percent of Anthropic shares would be directed to public benefit.
