The Saudi-led coalition said early on Tuesday that its air defences intercepted and destroyed three ballistic missiles launched by Yemen's Houthi group towards Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province. It did not say what the missiles were aimed at or give any details of casualties or damage.
A day earlier, the coalition said it had destroyed three drones over the Riyadh region and southern Saudi Arabia, without identifying their origin or targets. It also announced strikes on Houthi positions in Yemen, saying it had destroyed ballistic missile launchers, storage tunnels and a missile depot.
Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said the operations were aimed at dismantling the group's ballistic missile network and disrupting its supply routes.
According to sources, Saudi Arabia has stepped up its strikes on the Houthis since the group seized strategic areas along Yemen's Red Sea coast last month and advanced towards the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital shipping lane for Gulf oil exporters.
The renewed fighting has shattered a 2022 UN-brokered truce that had largely halted attacks between the coalition, which backs Yemen's internationally recognised government, and the Houthis, who control Sanaa. It has also opened another front in the US-Israeli war on Iran. Earlier, the Houthis fired missiles towards Mecca, Medina and Aden airport.
