Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed on Thursday that it tracked and shot down a US MQ-1 drone flying over the Strait of Hormuz.
According to sources, Iranian media said the drone was hit by a new, advanced air defence system operated by Iran's air defence forces. The IRGC has not released further details, including where any wreckage came down.
There has been no response so far from US Central Command, and Iran's claim that it downed the drone has not been independently verified.
The Strait of Hormuz is the world's most important sea lane for oil shipments and has remained a flashpoint since the US-Iran war began in February. Despite an April ceasefire, Washington has kept a naval blockade in place to cut Iran's oil revenue, so any military incident in the waterway is watched closely around the world.
