Iran has signalled a new push in regional diplomacy on Afghanistan, saying it plans to host another four-way meeting on the country in the coming months. Foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei made the announcement at his weekly news briefing on Monday, November 2.
According to sources, Baghaei said Iran was working to organise the meeting and that visits had already been made for it. He said Iran had taken part in several important events over the past year, including a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting and a four-way summit on Afghanistan, and that Tehran had not overlooked the importance of Afghanistan-related processes.
The spokesman gave no date or agenda for the meeting. Iran has previously convened four-way meetings on Afghanistan bringing together representatives of Iran, Russia, Pakistan and China.
The announcement comes as border tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan persist and regional countries step up consultations on ties with Kabul and on security.
