Barrister Salman Safdar, lawyer for former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan, met Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail on Monday, after months of gaps and repeated requests.
According to sources, Safdar said in a brief social media post late on Monday that the meeting, facilitated by the jail administration, began at about 4:30pm and lasted 40 minutes. He said he was allowed to see Khan after seven months and Bushra Bibi after eleven months, and that the time was not enough to cover all the cases and legal matters.
Safdar said both briefed him on their health and living conditions in jail and gave him fresh instructions on some cases, but he did not share details about their health. PTI central information secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram said the meeting followed applications filed in court, that no political issues were discussed, and that the party would speak only about the legal cases.
Safdar last met Khan on April 9, when the Islamabad High Court allowed a 60-minute meeting on the £190 million case, though he was not allowed to see Bushra Bibi. He claimed at the time that the couple were being held in near-total solitary confinement.
On August 18 the Supreme Court ordered that Khan be moved to Islamabad's Shifa International Hospital for a medical examination and that a special medical board be formed. On August 20 he was instead taken to PIMS, declared medically fit and returned to jail, and the federal government sought a review of the order the same day. Khan has been held at Adiala for more than three years, and weekly meetings with his family and lawyers have been denied since December last year.
