Construction is underway on more than 75 kilometres of the second Kabul-Jalalabad highway route, which is being developed as an alternative to the existing road to reduce congestion and improve travel safety.
The route begins in Kabul's Bagrami district and passes through Khak Jabar and Surobi before continuing through Hesarak, Sherzad, Khogyani and Surkh Rod in Nangarhar. Machinery and technical teams are working on several sections.
Project officials say mountainous terrain and extensive cutting through hills are among the main construction challenges. The sections now under construction are expected to be completed in roughly three years. The existing corridor has long faced congestion and difficult mountain sections, making additional road capacity a significant transport objective.
