Afghanistan and Turkmenistan have agreed to establish a joint road transport commission following two days of technical talks in Herat. Ariana News reported that officials discussed ways to improve cross-border freight movement and resolve practical transport problems.
Afghanistan’s transport ministry said the talks covered easier visa procedures for drivers and traders, better use of the Lapis Lazuli corridor, and an increase in transit vehicles. Railway links, bilateral trade and future private-sector participation were also discussed.
The Lapis Lazuli route connects Afghanistan through Turkmenistan and the Caspian Sea toward Azerbaijan, Georgia, Türkiye and European markets. The new commission is intended to provide a regular mechanism for coordination on road transport and transit issues.
