Afghanistan’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce says foreign investment in the country exceeded $1 billion over the past five years. Ministry spokesman Mohammad Asif Elyas said investors from China, Iran, Türkiye, Qatar and Uzbekistan were among those active in the market.
According to the ministry, the investment went into oil and gas, electricity, mining, cement, food production and other sectors. Officials also say the projects created thousands of jobs, though they did not provide a single independently audited employment total alongside the investment figure.
The more-than-$1 billion total is a government estimate. A comprehensive independent dataset covering all foreign investment flows into Afghanistan over the same five-year period was not available for comparison, so the overall amount remains attributed to the ministry.
