A farmer in Parwan has planted around 50 grape varieties brought from Central Asia, Russia and Ukraine, with early harvests described as encouraging. Grower Mir Hamza says several varieties differ from grapes commonly cultivated in Afghanistan and some have relatively few seeds.
The initial results suggest possible commercial potential, but one season is not enough to establish long-term suitability. Yield, fruit quality, ripening time, resistance to disease and pests, tolerance of local temperatures, water demand and market prices normally need to be observed across multiple seasons. Storage, transport and suitability for raisin production can also affect commercial value.
Parwan is one of Afghanistan's established grape-growing areas. If the imported varieties perform consistently, they could help farmers diversify harvest periods and supply different market segments. Wider planting would still benefit from agricultural testing and local evidence before growers commit significant land and investment.
