Local officials in Herat say mining, infrastructure and public-service projects completed or underway across the province during the past five years have an announced value exceeding $5.6 billion.
Governor’s spokesman Mufti Yusuf Saeedi said the total includes major mining ventures as well as roads, water networks, housing and other development work. He cited a $2 million Shindand-Pushtkoh road project and projects involving lead and zinc in Adraskan.
Saeedi also referred to an iron project in Ghoryan valued by officials at around $5.5 billion and the Todi iron project in Pashtun Zarghun with announced investment of about $140 million. Other cited work included Pashdan Dam, railway and terminal facilities, housing, check dams and water projects.
The overall $5.6 billion figure is an official provincial estimate and has not been independently audited.
