BRUSSELS: According to Geo News, two European lawmakers openly backed Pakistan's position on the Indus Waters Treaty during a meeting at the European Parliament on the future of global governance.

Czech MEP Andrej Dostál supported Pakistan's stance on the treaty, while German MEP Michael von der Schulenburg said the international community should help ensure the treaty is implemented and respected, the report said.

Addressing the meeting, Rahim Hayat Qureshi, Pakistan's ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union, said respect for international treaties was essential for global stability and for international law to remain credible. He raised Pakistan's concerns over violations of the Indus Waters Treaty and called for the Jammu and Kashmir dispute to be settled under the relevant United Nations resolutions.

Qureshi said relations between states should rest on equal rights and that UN reform efforts must include the views of all relevant parties. He also called for stronger international cooperation on reforming the global financial system, tackling climate change and developing modern technologies.

Geo News noted that India announced in April 2025 it would hold the treaty in abeyance after an attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir. Pakistan rejected the move, maintaining that the treaty cannot be suspended unilaterally.

Brokered by the World Bank in 1960, the Indus Waters Treaty governs how Pakistan and India share the waters of the Indus River system. Islamabad has warned that any attempt to restrict its water flows would have serious consequences.
