ISLAMABAD: According to The Express Tribune, the Foreign Office said on Friday that the foreign ministers of Pakistan and 18 other countries had condemned Colombia's inauguration of an embassy in Jerusalem in a joint statement.

The statement said any step recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital is null and void and violates UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolutions 476 and 478 of 1980. The ministers urged Colombia to reverse the decision and reaffirmed the Palestinian right to an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Besides Pakistan, the statement was backed by Algeria, Djibouti, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Syria, Sudan, Turkiye and Yemen.

Colombia opened its Jerusalem embassy on October 14, becoming the 10th country to do so, the report said. The move is part of a reset with Israel under President Abelardo de la Espriella; his predecessor Gustavo Petro cut diplomatic ties with Israel in May 2024 over the Gaza war.
